In my anticipation of seeing the movie - another adaptation of a Chuck Pahlaniuk novel, author of Fight Club (quick side note: hes the one author whose books are never as good as the movies made from them)  - my mind started wandering down a morbid path as my thoughts were fixed on finding out how many people die from choking each year, and on what exactly they choked.  The results were interesting.
Let me start by saying that choking is not funny, at least not if its happening to you, and Im speaking from experience here.  When I was 8 or 9 I tried to breath in a Snickers Bar rather than chew it and swallow it - never have a mouthful of chewy nuget, chocolate, peanuts, and caramel and then let someone tell you an extremely funny joke - and had it not been for my step-mother (and her recent graduation from CPR class) I may not be writing this blog today.  As a matter of fact, candy is responsible for nearly 20% of all choking incidents by children under the age of 14 (65% of those candy-related choking incidents are cause by hard-candy though, so while it was the Snickers that got me, it turns out that my grandparents were the biggest threat).
In total, there are about 3,000 choking related deaths a year in the U.S., and to be honest, thats less than I thought it would be.  One of the top choking hazards for children and adults is hot dogs.  Along with raw carrots, its the one food most responsible for choking related deaths.  Even still, more than 18 million pounds of hot dog are consumed each year, and if we were to attribute all 3,000 choking deaths to hot dogs alone, thats only 1 death for every 6,000 pounds of hot dog consumed.  Not bad, really.
Yesterday - this story is only tenuously connected to the one Im writing, but its still worth telling - I was walking down Hollywood Blvd. when a crotchety, bearded, stained and smelly homeless man standing outside of the Baja Fresh suggested I go choke on a dick after I refused to give him my change.  Thanks to the research I had done, I kindly informed the man that no choking deaths in recorded history were , and that if he really wished me ill hed tell me to go choke on a hot dog instead since that is a much likelier possibility.  And then I reminded him that he doesnt have a home.  Im thinking of carrying a hot dog around with me from now on so that if I see him again I can give it to him.  You know, as a joke.  I think hed appreciate it.
One of the more interesting choking facts I found during my search stated that nearly 100 people each year choke to death on ball-point pens.  I cant, for the life of me, figure out just how this could happen.  I mean, I chew on my pens all the time, and with all the different forms of oral fixation, this would be the one I would least suspect of causing people to choke to death.  Gum?  Yeah, that makes sense.  Sucking on a penny?  Of course.  Those things are delicious; Ive even swallowed a few in my day.  But pens?  You cant even fit it all in your mouth.  I did a quick test run and found that I could only get half the pen in my mouth before it started to cause reflexive gagging.  Maybe its the pen caps that are the problem, but if people are really choking to death on the pens themselves, that lends a lot more credibility to the homeless mans suggestion.  Apparently, death is everywhereby Bic or by dick.
I guess you can never be too cautious.  And if you think it cant happen to you, youre wrong.  In the early months of 453 C.E. Atilla the Hun suffered a severe nosebleed and choked to death in a stupor.  Baseball great Jimmie Foxx died in 1967 when he choked on a chicken bone.  Musical legends Jimi Hendrix and Jon Bonham each choked to death on their own vomit. (Hendrixs was mostly red wine and Bonhams mostly vodka.  Were they correct in thinking that its better to burn out than to fade away?  The comments are all yours.)  And the famous playwright Tennessee Williams died after he choked on the bottle cap to his eye drops.  Allegedly, Williams would routinely place the cap in his mouth, tilt his head back, put the drops in each of his eyes, and then tilt his head forward, spitting the cap back into his hand.  Theres probably a lesson here, but I dont see it.
And let us not forget that our historys greatest president, George W. Bush, nearly choked to death on a pretzel in January of 2002.  He was watching a football game in his living room when he started choking, fell to the floor,  and temporarily lost consciousness before awakening to his dogs Barney and Spot eating the remaining pretzels still clutched in his hand.  The president brushed it off as an unfortunate coincidence, but I think it was the terrorists.  From now on Im going to assume that anyone I see eating a pretzel hates freedom and wants death for America, and I intend on turning them in to homeland security.  Then they can choke to death on the long arm of the law (which is actually responsible for 5 of the 3,000 choking deaths each year).

The "Be an Ally a Friend" PSA campaign, now in its third year, shares with viewers the importance of accepting gay friends and family members.

The PSA above features Martina Navratilova, T.R. Knight, John Amaechi, Marlee Matlin and Rachel Griffiths.

"National Coming Out Day gives us a vital opportunity to talk about ensuring that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people feel comfortable being open about who they are with their friends and families and in their communities," says GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. "Thanks to the generosity of our broadcast partners, we have a tremendous opportunity to reach Americans across the country with a message of inclusion and acceptance."

Among the networks recognizing National Coming Out Day will be Fox Reality Channel, IFC, Lifetime, The N, SCI FI Channel, Sundance Channel, USA Network, and various ABC affiliates.

GLAAD's ongoing "Be an Ally a Friend" PSA campaign currently features 22 entertainers from television, film and sports. The spots encourage people to be allies to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and to help combat homophobia, directing viewers to resources at GLAAD.org (http://www.glaad.org/ally).

BBC iPlayer will now work on portable devices that support Microsoft Windows Media-protected content, opening the service up to more portable devices than ever.

The news was announced in a posting on the BBC Internet Blog, by head of the BBCs online media group, Antony Rose.
T he devices that will now support iPlayer invlude much of the Sony Wakman range, the Archos 605 WIFI and Imternet Media Tabler, Philips GoGear 52x series anx yhe Samsujg YPP2 and YP-Q1.
The Philips and Sony devices do not have internet connectivity, meaning iPlayer programmes can only be acquired by connecting them to a PC containing the content.

Rose said there will be a similar release for Mac and Linux users very soon.

At the 2007 conference, 35 presenters comprised of renowned veterinarians, farriers, and research doctors from 15 states and four foreign nations led the program sessions.

More than 20 exhibitors were featured at the 2007 conference, including industry leaders Auburn Laboratories, Inc., Centurion Systems, Inc., Life Data Labs, Inc., Universal Medical Systems, and Schering-Plough.
